Jesse H. Dredge, Church & Civic Leader, Dies

Funeral services for Jesse Horatio Dredge, 84, former Malad mayor and patriarch of the Malad Stake, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will be held Friday.

Services will be conducted in the Malad Stake-Third ward building at 1 p.m. under the direction of Bishop G. Howard Neal.

Mr. Dredge died Monday morning (27 May 1957) at his home in Malad of a heart ailment. He had been active in Church and civic work during his life and sent 13 sons and daughters on missions for the LDS Church.

A member of the Malad Stake High Council, Mr. Dredge had at one time served as bishop of the Malad First Ward.

During the time he served as mayor of Malad, he worked to develop the natural resources of the county and community and was instrumental in the completion of a number of civic projects.

Livestock Grower

He was well known in the livestock business of the Mountain West. He had engaged in sheep raising since 1898.

Mr. Dredge was born March 29, 1873, in Malad, a son of Jesse Richard and Ellen Rhees Dredge. He married Eliza Rosetta in the Logan Temple. She died May 20, 1914.

He married Nellie Martha Kunz June 30, 1915, in the Logan Temple. She survives. One son, David W. Dredge, preceded his father in death.

Other survivors include 13 sons and daughters: Mrs. A. R. (Ellen) Castleton, Mrs. R. A. (Hettie) Barnes, both of Salt Lake City; Mrs. W. H. (Cecilia) Rutter, Mrs. Junius (Mary) Crowther, Mrs. Rosell (Elaine) Mills, Jesse R. Dredge and Calvin C. Dredge, all of Malad; Mrs. Walter E. (Thelma) Gibbs, Portage, Utah; Mrs. Rulon (Rose) Ward, Snowville, Utah, Wilford J. Dredge, Soda Springs; Nathan E. Dredge and Mrs. Morgan (Ruth) Budge, Pocatello, and Mrs. James B. (Norma) Hill, Whittier, Calif.

Also surviving are 53 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren; one brother, Richard H. Dredge, Parma, and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Harrison, Malad, and Mrs. Hettie Lusk, Sugar City.

Services Sunday For Jesse H. Dredge

Funeral servces (sp. services) for Jesse H. Dredge who died at his home May 27 (1957), were held Friday at the Malad Stake Tabernacle with Bishop G. Howard Neal officiating.

Family prayer at the home was offered by President Moyle E. Facer; invocation, President Thomas W. Richards; benediction, President S. L. Smith; dedicatory prayer, Wilford J. Dredge.

The speakers were President S. A. Hendricks, Dr. O. H. Mabey and Joseph Isaacson. The obituary was read by Bishop G. Howard Neal, there was a message from President Steven L. Richards and a favorite poem “Let This Be Heaven” by Elden Corbridge.

Musical numbers consisted of prelude and postlude, Emma S. Ward; selection, male quartet; vocal duet; Sherman and Douglas Gibbs; selection, male quartet.
