Jerry Derk Jones, 37, life-long Oneida resident, was killed during a tractor/semi truck accident late Saturday afternoon, November 22.
A semi tractor trailer driver by Leonard O. Thomas, 67, of Grace, was eastbound on Highway 38, Milepost 1.5 near the Jones family ranch on Saturday, at 5:20 p.m. Thomas’s semi rear-ended a 1984 Allis-Chalmers front end loader driver by Derk Jones of Malad.
Jones was fatally injured as he was thrown from the tractor. He was transported to the Oneida County Hospital where he died from his injuries. The semi went off the road and into a fence, Mr. Thomas was not injured.
The accident is being investigated by Idaho State Police, assisted by Oneida County officers. No other official statement was available from ISP prior to press time Monday afternoon.
Jerry Derk Jones, 37, of Malad, died Saturday November 22, 1997 in Malad, from injuries sustained in a truck accident. He was born January 9, 1960 in Malad, a son of Jerry H. and Sandra Pierce Jones.
Derk grew up and was educated in Malad (class of 1978). He later attended the College of Southern Utah and Utah State University. He married Erin Jones, May 28, 1991, in Malad.
As a young man, Derk had rodeoed in high school and college, and had always loved farming and ranching. Since 1984 he had been employed with the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golf. Derk’s great love in life was his wife, Erin, and daughter Kaitlin, as well as spending time on the ranch with her father, mother, and brother.
He is survived by his wife and daughter; his brother B. Todd Jones and his parents: Jerry and Sandra, all of Malad. His grandmother: Marguerite Pierce of Orem, Utah.
