James Walton J. Evans

EVANS, JAMES WALTON J., December 3, 1897 – July 7, 1980

James Walton J. Evans, 82, died July 7, 1980 at the Oneida County Hospital in Malad. He was born December 3, 1897 in Malad to Isaac and Annie Williams Jones Evans.

In 1919 after graduating from Malad High School, he attended Utah Agricultural College at Logan, U, where he was active in football and wrestling. He was a member of the First Utah Agricultural College Rocky Mountain championship football team. He graduated in 1923 with a B.S. degree in agriculture.

On March 23, 1923 he married Eva Gean Murdock. They were later divorced. H taught one year in Malad Jr. High, also coaching football and taught part of one year in the Dairy Creek Rural School. For several summers he was employed by the U.S. Forest Service as a rider for trespassing cattle.

In the spring of 1972 he moved to Nevada and taught for one year. Then he went to Tularosa, NM where he remained six years teaching vocational agriculture.

On May 29, 1930 he married Othelia (Cass) Uhlir at Alamagordo, NM. She died June 12, 1957.

He was employed by the Agriculture Extension Service in New Mexico for about 2 ½ years, then accepted a position in the Rural Rehabilitation and Farm Security Administration until he returned to Malad in 1942 to operate the old family farm. He was also employed by the Cache Valley Breeding Assn. of Logan, UT for 20 years.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge. He was secretary of the Malad Forest Users Assn. for 15 years, and served on the Deep Creek Irrigation Co. board for 20 years.

He is survived by three nieces, Mrs. William (Gloria Van Cott) Reichart, El Paso, TX; Mrs. Kay (Beverly Van Cott) Spackman, Sandy, UT and Mrs. Walter (Carolyn Jensen) Hansson, Houston, TX; two nephews, John Van Cott, Spokane, WA, and Ronald Jensen, San Diego, CA.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents and five sisters.

Funeral services will be held July 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Malad with Rev. F. Norman Naugler officiating.

Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery.
