Jas. Parley Sorensen Dies Sunday

James Parley Sorensen, 75, prominent in civic and church work, died suddenly Sunday of natural causes. He was born in Mendon, Utah.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Malad Second Ward Chapel.

An Arbon Valley pioneer in 1909, he was an Oneida County commissioner six years, was a high priest in the Malad Second Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had been president of the Stake Mission, president of the Quorum of Seventy, was a member of the Malad Lions Club, was a founder and served on the board of directors of the Oneida County Grain Growers Assn.

He married Rachel Parker Nov. 15, 1905, in Logan LDS Temple.

He is survived by his widow, Malad; two daughters and a son, Mrs. Jesse (Devola) Thompson, Logan; Mrs. Bert (Luzelle) Eliason Jr., Snowville, Utah; Myron Sorensen, Malad; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four brothers; Ammon A. Sorensen, Malad; Franklin E. Sorensen, Logan; Chauncey L. Sorensen, Ogden; Claud A. Sorensen, Mendon, Utah; Three sisters, Mrs. A. W. Cooley, Salt Lake City; Mrs. William Longstroth, Mrs. Vance D. Walker, Mendon.

Gordon Crowther, bishop’s counselor in the Second ward, officiated at the services.

Speakers were Colen Sweeten Sr., Griff L. Jenkins, Dr. Thomas W. Richards and Counselor Gordon Crowther, who also gave the obituary. Musical numbers consisted of prelude and postlude by Betty H. Crowther; duet, Guy and Nellie Gleed; violin solo, Fern Willie, Family prayer at the home was offered by A. G. Willie; invocation, Thomas D. Evans; benediction, Jacob Kern; dedicatory prayer, Bishop Myron Sorensen.

Casket bearers were Clair Eliason, J. Gaurth Thompson, Bruce Thompson, Peirce Sorensen, Jimmy Sorensen, Joseph D. Swensen.
