Irene Waldron

Irene Pearl Christensen Waldron, 94, of Downey, passed away Thursday evening, January 30, at the Oneida Co. Nursing Home in Malad, following an illness. She was born December 1, 1897, in Cambridge, the daughter of Rasmus H. and Nancy M. Bennett Christensen.

She married Myrum Arthur Byington, February 19, 1919, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He passed away June, 1921. She married John Edward Viehweg, November 16, 1934 at Downey. This marriage ended in divorce. She married Benjamin Hanes Waldron, May 3, 1939 in the Logan LDS Temple. He passed away February 25, 1971.

Mrs. Waldron was a lifetime resident of Downey and also attended schools there. She loved to read, cook and work in her garden and with her flowers. She received many trophies and ribbons for her cooking and canning at the South Bannock County Fairs in Downey. She enjoyed quilting and one of her quilts is in the White House in Washington D.C.

She was active in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She was midwife during her younger years. Later she was a nanny and was employed for several years by the same families.

Mrs. Waldron was an active memĀ­ber of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as visitĀ­ing teacher, Primary teacher, Mutual Counselor, seventeen years as Relief Society Counselor and was active in her attendance at the temple.

She was active in local elections and very involved with the senior citizens. She loved table games and was “Master” of Chinese Checkers. She loved to travel and be with her children.

Survivors include three sons: Arthur 2. Byington, Colton, Oregon; Leland j. Waldron, San Jose, California; 3eorge Waldron, St. George, Utah; wo daughters, Althea Waldron Christensen, Renton, Washington; Vanda Waldron Prisbrey, Layton, Utah; one brother, Golden Christensen, Downey; one sister, Zela Toler, Swan Lake; 17 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grand-children. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 4, in the Downey LDS Chapel with Bishop Gary Barnes officiating. Interment was in the Downey cemetery.
