Services Tuesday For Ira B. Baker

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Malad Second ward chapel for Ira Bernard Baker, 34, who died Friday (23 September 1955) in a Salt Lake City hospital following a long illness.

Mr. Baker was born May 3, 1921 at Holbrook, a son of Ira and Anna Laura Knighton Baker. He was graduated from Malad high school and then attended Weber College at Ogden and the University of Idaho at Moscow. Entering the U. S. Army Air Force, during World War II, Mr. Baker attained the rank of captain and served as a B-29 pilot in the South Pacific. During combat he was shot down and spent several days in open water before being rescued by a U. S. submarine. Following the war he served with the occupation forces in Japan. He was a member of the LDS Church.

Survivors include three brothers, seven sisters: William E. Weiser, Idaho; Lew, Malad; Dan, San Francisco; Mrs. Virginia Price, Dillon, Mont.; Mrs. Stella Sanger, Pocatello; Mrs. Helen Leather, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Laura Clark, Oakland, Calif.; Mrs. Adeline Jensen, Chamberlain, Idaho; Mrs. Afton Wood, Las Vegas, Nevada; Mrs. Iona Poulsen, Arco, Idaho.

Bishop Myron Sorensen officiated at the services. Family prayer at the home was offered by J. P. Sorenson; invocation, George Sweeten; benediction, Dr. O. H. Mabey; dedicatory prayer, J. Guy Benson. Speakers were Bishop Sorensen who also gave the obituary; W. W. Thomas and Dr. Thomas W. Richards. Musical numbers were prelude and postlude, Myra Jean John; vocal solo, Jenkin Palmer; violin solo, Mrs. Fern Willie. Casket bearers were Max Henry Jr., Verl Rose, Gerrald Wood, Nelden Baker, Jay Baker and Gary Baker, Graveside services at the cemetery were conducted by the Ernest W. Jones post of the American Legion.
