Ida Hughes Smith, 86, of Malad, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 1994, at her home following a long illness.

She was born November 19, 1907, in Samaria, Idaho, a daughter of David and Elizabeth Ann Thomas Hughes. She grew up and was educated in Samaria and Malad, attended Malad High School, and later received her L.P.N. nursing certificate at the Oneida County Hospital.

She married Roscoe Reed Smith January 11, 1928, in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. They had made their home in Holbrook and Malad, and she had worked for the Oneida County Hospital for many years.

She was active in the LDS Church, and had held many offices in Primary, Relief Society and MIA. She also served as stake mission secretary. She was a member of the Belletrist Club, Malad Valley Square Dancing Club, and the Malad Knitting Club.

Ida was well-known as a humanitarian, who had shown care and concern to many friends and neighbors.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Roscoe, who had cared for her during her long illness; two sons, Arthur R. Smith, of Malad, and Brent H. and wife, Mardene Smith, of Pocatello; three daughters, Jo Nonnenmacher of Brookings, Oregon, Sara M. and husband, Ronald Hartwick of Logan, Utah and Glenn Sue and husband, Richard Laursen, of Logan; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lavenia H. Palmer of Ogden, Utah, and Mrs. Chet (Blanche) Burnett, of Malad. She was preceded in death by one brother, one sister and one grandson.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 6, 1994 in the Malad LDS Stake Chapel. Burial was in the Malad City Cemetery.

Ida Hughes Smith, 86, of Malad, and wife of Roscoe Smith, died today, Aug. 2, 1994, at her home following a long illness. Funeral arrangements and an obituary will appear in a later edition of The Idaho State Journal. Services are under the direction of the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home of Malad.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 6, 12:00 noon at the Malad LDS Third Ward Chapel. Friends may call Friday evening 7:00 to 9:00 o’clock at Benson-Horsley Funeral Home, and one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery.
