MALAD – Hilda Merrill Richards, 90, Ogden, Utah, died Saturday evening in Malad at the home of her son, Dr. Melvin Richards.

She was born Feb. 7, 1889, at Smithville, Utah, to Marriner Wood and Elna Johnsson Merrill. She was educated in Smithville, Utah and had attended BYU in Logan. She married Thomas W. Richards Aug. 28, 1907, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He died Nov. 5, 1970. She was a long time resident of Malad, but the past 18 years she had resided in Ogden.

She was a member of the LDS church and had served as a ward Relief Society president, a member of the Stake Relief Society Board, a Sunday school teacher, and visiting teacher. She served as supervisor of the women’s organization of the East Central States Mission while her husband presided there. She was a charter member of the Malad Ladies Literary Club, and enjoyed gardening and handiwork.

Survivors include a son and three daughters, Dr. Melvin M. Richards, Malad, Mrs. H. Miffin (Grace) Williams, Ogden, Utah; Mrs. James H. (Elna) Bischoff, Ogden; Mrs. Reed M. (Kathryn) Powell, Villa Park, Calif.; 19 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Mae Hale, Logan, Utah; and Loretta Rigby, Rexburg. She was preceded in death by one daughter.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Malad LDS Stake chapel. Friends may call at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home in Malad Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and one hour before services Wednesday. Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery.
