On the early morning of Saturday, September 19, 2009, Grant Harris, 81, passed away peacefully in his sleep after a valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Grant was born September 5, 1928 in Malad, Idaho, the second child of George Ellis Harris and Hannah Adelia Stuart. He attended schools in Malad and graduated from Utah State University in 1950.
He married Marilyn Olsen in November 1951 in the LDS Logan Temple. Together they had five beautiful children. They divorced. Later, he married Verlayne Richardson Stoker, and they made their home in North Ogden and enjoyed each other for the past 25 years.
Grant was an aeronautical engineer and worked at Hill AFB until he retired in 1973. He then founded, owned and operated G.S. Harris Company (Harristone). His hobbies have been rocks, rocks, and more rocks. He also enjoyed raising trout in his ponds and watching his friends and family catch them. His great love besides his wife, Verlayne was flying his own aircraft.
Grant was an Elder in the North Ogden 7th Ward of the LDS church and enjoyed the friendships he has gained there.
Grant is survived by his loving wife, and sweetheart Verlayne R. Harris, daughter, Jan (Dennis) Gailey of St. George, Utah; son, Jed (Ulrika) Harris of Kaysville, Utah; daughter, Cindy Harris of Malad; daughter, Misty Linger of Kaysville, Utah; son, Jody D. (Kim) Harris of Pleasant View, Utah; stepson, Val (Susan) Stoker of Eden, Utah; stepson, Jeff (Wendy) Stoker of Harrisville, Utah; brother, Gary Harris of Layton, Utah, 2 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Grant was preceded in death by his parents: one infant brother, George Ellis Harris, Jr.; and a brother, Thayne Harris of Ogden, Utah.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 24 at 11 a.m. at the North Ogden 7th Ward, 205 E. Elberta Drive, in North Ogden, Utah.
Friends may call at Myers Mortuary, 848 Washington Blvd., Ogden, Utah on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the North Ogden 7th Ward.
Interment will be at the Ben Lomond Cemetery in North Ogden, Utah.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Aspen Care Center for all their compassion and for putting up with Grant these past nine months. Also a special thanks to Dr. Stephen Bruce.
