Florence Nellie Layton Stones, 26 October 1904

DOWNEY – Florence Nellie Layton Stones, 97, long time Downey resident, passed away March 17, 2002.

She was born October 26, 1904 in Lewiston, UT, a daughter of John and Lucilla Smith Layton.

She married Melvin H. Stones on September 27, 1922 in the Logan, UT LDS Temple. They were the parents of six children.

Nellie spent most of her life in the Downey area. She was always an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various organizations until her hearing failed a few years ago. Besides being an excellent homemaker, her hobbies included quilting and sewing beautiful quilt tops, crocheting and tatting. She also did entertaining reading for community socials and programs.

She is survived by four children, Velma Armstrong of Pocatello, ID; Dr. John (Dorothy) Stones of Downey; Dr. Carl (Clea) Stones of Twin Falls, ID; and Una Benson of Downey; 18 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and three step great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Ben and Lyle and one grandson.

Funeral services will be held March 21, 2002 in the Downey LDS First Ward Chapel. Burial will be in the Downey City Cemetery. Arrangements are by Horsley’s Marsh Valley Funeral Home.
