Woodruff Woman Keeps 85th Date
WOODRUFF, IDAHO — Industry and cheerful service have characterized the life of Mr. Eunice W. Harris, who recently celebrated her 85th birthday here.
Mrs. Harris, when asked if she had learned any worthwhile lessons from her 85 years, said: “Yes, I have learned that happiness can be found in doing the best you can with what you have.”
She added the observation that “there is no excuse for any person to shirk their duty to church and community”, with the modern conveniences that are available today.
Mrs. Harris was born Jan. 29, 1873 at Curlew Valley, a daughter of George and Eunice Nicholas Ward. She has lived in Woodruff since 1875.
She was married to Robert W. Harris Jan. 12, 1898 at Woodruff. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After the death of her husband, she lived for several years with her mother and helped rear six of her brothers and sisters.
She recalls as a little child watching her father thresh grain by driving a horse over the threshing floor. In the summer of 1877 the grasshoppers ate the entire crop, and her father was forced to quit farming and enter railroad work.
She has been a lifelong active member of the Church. She was set apart as secretary of the Primary Assn. at the age of 12 when it was organized in her ward. She has been active in Relief Society and genealogical work, and two of her sons have been bishops.
