PORTAGE,Utah- Esther Elmeda Hall John, 100, of Portage, Utah, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March25, 1995.
She was born Sept. 12, 1894, in Portage, Utah, a daughter of Leonard Parley and Charlotte Morris Hall.
As a child, the family moved to Malta, Idaho, where she grew up and was educated. At 17 she moved to Washakie, Utah, where she worked as a cook for the ranch hands.
She married Noah James John Sept. 25, 1913 in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple, where they moved to Portage, where they farmed, ranched and reared 13 children (one child died as an infant). Mr John passed away May 18, 1967.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served, as Primary president, YWMIA president, was a teacher in Primary, Relief Society and Sunday school, and was a visiting teacher until age 85.
Mrs. John also helped organize the Portage PTA and the county Farm Bureau.
She is survived by six sons and spouses, James Floyd and Retha John of Parry, Utah, Deward Leonard and Hope John of Blackfoot, Idaho, Sylvera and Hilda John of Malad, Ellis Wynn and Ida Mae John, Lyle Loren and Mary Beth John, Dr. Denton Clane and Linda John all of Portage, Utah; five daughters and spouses, Esther Gwenn and Jesse Paskett, Margaret Rena and Howard (deceased) Facer all of Salt Lake City, Elma and Arvel (deceased) Bell of Portage, Rilla Beth and George Archibald of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Florence Charoleete and Boyd (deceased) Madsen of Redding, California; 58 grandchildren, 158 great-grandchildren, and 103 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lenord Parley Hall, Malta, Idaho. She was preceded in death by two daughters, two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, march 29, at noon in the Portage, Utah LDS Chapel, with Bishop Val Dee Gibbs presiding. Friends may call at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home, 132 W 300 N. Malad, on Tuesday evening March 28, from 6 p.m. To 8 p.m.
On Wednesday, the family will meet with fiends in the Portage, LDS Ward Chapel from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Portage Utah Cemetery.
