Emma Louise Davis Chambers

A blue-eyed bundle of spunk, Emma Louise Carter was the caboose born to Laurence G. and Emma Carter in Ogden, Utah on April 23rd 1933. Emma Louise passed her childhood in the wide open space of Park Valley, Utah. She graduated from Box Elder High School and cooked and sewed her way to a Home Economics degree at Utah Agricultural College (now USU). She then adjusted to the booming metropolis of Malad, Idaho to begin her 25-year-long career of teaching home ec and life skills in high school. What next? A CLUE (a game the family often played)…. Emma Louise, in the library, with a book… became flushed the moment she first laid eyes on fellow teacher (and handsome devil) Melvin ‘Joe’ Davis. They married July 29, 1957 in the Logan Temple and made their home in Samaria. Emma and Joe loved to travel, did it often, and acquired new friendships on multiple continents. They may have left a piece of their hearts in San Francisco. They also raised two children, Jacqueline Rae and Melvin Jeffrey, to whom they passed habits of fabulous frugality, strong work ethic, and deep appreciation of nature.

Louise was a Jill of all trades, and master of several as well. She was admired by her girls in home ec and Future Homemakers of America and attended many conventions with them. She could sew a lavish prom dress and skin a raccoon; probably in the same day. She loved animals and kept all visitors entertained with an array of dogs, cats, geese, chickens, guinea hens, lambs, and rabbits. One might say Louise was proud of her peacocks.

Following Joe’s death in 1993, and time lived abroad in Germany with Jeff, his wife Lisa, and family, Emma married Revere Chambers , of Syracuse, Utah in 1999. Together they derived great joy serving an LDS mission to Nauvoo, Illinois, wintering in Arizona, and cruising to Australia and the like.

Family was first to Emma Louise. She kept in contact through cards and calling “just to say I love you”. Her voicemails were a pleasure to both her grandchildren and their college roommates. Louise served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She had a passion for the scriptures and requested they be near her in both sickness and in health. Louise mourned the loss of her husband, Joe, her son, Melvin Jeffrey Davis, a brother Kay, and her loyal poodles with painted nails, Lady, Toots, and Weezy. She was also preceded in death by her parents. She is remembered and missed by her husband, Revere, Samaria and Syracuse, UT, daughter Jacqueline Rae Bowles (Kelly), of Ogden, UT, daughter-in-law Lisa Davis, Colorado Springs, CO, her grandchildren (6 Olson, 4 Davis), and 8 great-grandchildren. Also left behind are her siblings, a brother, Lael (Rowena)Carter, sisters Betty Jo Reiser and Luana Heaton of Salt Lake, sister Marvell (Delbert)Hirschi of North Ogden, and a beloved cousin, Dixie Conger (Reed) of North Logan. Emma Louise passed away on January 27, 2015 in Ogden, Utah. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 2 at 12 noon in the Malad LDS 2nd Ward Chapel, 20 S. 100 W. Friends may visit with the family at the church from 10:00-11:45 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Samaria Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to www.horsleyfuneralhome.com

If you wish to honor her memory, please consider giving flowers to a friend, becoming an organ and/or blood donor, or supporting a Malad High School student in any fundraising efforts they may pursue this school year. As Grandma would say, “Don’t take any wooden nickels!”
