Elmer Phillips

DOWNEY – Elmer William Phillips, 67, Downey, died Sunday [Oct. 6, 1984] in Marsh Valley Hospital.

He was born Aug. 11, 1917, in Downey, to Daniel Jones and Rebecca Francis Ware Phillips. He grew up and was educated in Downey where he was a lifetime resident.

As a young man, he had farmed and ranched on the family farm in the Woodland area west of Downey.

He married Naomi Lowe Foster Nov. 22, 1937, in Pocatello.

He had worked for the Forest Service and for the Marsh Valley Cattlemen’s Association. For several years, he worked for the Idaho State Highway Department. He worked as a heavy equipment operator in the Downey Swan Lake Highway District for 17 years. He retired in 1977 due to ill health.

He enjoyed working with cattle and horses and for many years he participated in rodeos.

He was a member of the LDS Church.

He is survived by his wife, Downey; three sons and one daughter, Theron[sic], Inkom; Bill, Downey, Calif]; Dennis Downey, Idaho; Mrs. Dole (Sandy) Hansen, McCammon; 11 grandchildren three great-grandchildren; one brother, John “Jack” E. Phillips, Arco; two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Lawson, Oakland, California; and Mrs. Lynn (Hazel) Evans, Pocatello.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at noon in the Downey LDS First Ward chapel with Bishop Willis Barfus officiating. Burial will be in the Cambridge Cemetery.
