Edna Jones Thorpe

On Wednesday, September 26, 2018, our dear friend, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother passed away from a heart attack. She was 98 years old. We did not anticipate Wednesday morning would be her last on this earth. Mom fulfilled her desire to live her life independent of becoming a burden on anyone. In reality, she could never be a burden as she seldom complained or sought attention for herself. She demonstrated to all that as one grows old the heart and mind can stay forever young. Mom brightened our day with her wit and adventurous spirit. She was always ready for a change. Mom recently passed her driver’s test to renew her driving privileges to age 105! She was proud of that achievement and very careful in using it. She will be sorely missed and always loved.

Edna was born June 13, 1920 in Cherry Cheek, Idaho to John and Veda Jones. She was the third of eight children and the oldest girl. She spent her childhood and youth helping run the farm, caring for her siblings and in the Malad Mountains herding sheep. Working as a secretary in the Oneida County Farm Bureau, Edna met and later married Clyde Thorpe on July 24, 1940. Their marriage was later solemnized Thursday, April 24, 1941 in the Logan Utah Temple. They eventually settled in South Weber and then Clearfield. Together they raised four children; Paul Gary (Connie Chilson, deceased), Thomas Clyde (Shirley Smith), Maurine (Harry Balle, deceased), and John B (Lucy Jones).

Edna was widowed November 8, 1977 when Clyde passed away from complications to diabetes. Edna has lived in “her home on the corner” in Layton since 1983.

Edna has been preceded in death by each of her siblings and one grandson. She is the matriarch for four children, 17 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and loved living in the Cherry Lane Ward. She has served in many callings through her life and loved serving her neighbors and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 1, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Cherry Lane Ward, 1015 Emerald Drive, Layton. Friends may visit family Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
