Ebenezer Morse Jones

Ebenezer Morse Jones, 18 April 1893

Ebby Jones, 103, passed away at his home October 13, 1996 of causes incident to age.

Mr. Jones was born in a small log house on his parents’ homestead on April 18, 1893 in Pleasant View, ID. He was the eighth of eleven children of Jeremiah and Mary Jane Morse Jones and received his education in the local one room school.

He was called to the military in 1917 and was one of the few surviving World War I veterans in the State of Utah. He married Lucy Adeline Burnett, December 21, 1921 in the Logan LDS Temple. They were the parents of four sons. He was a devoted member or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in a variety of assignments. He and Lucy were Era representatives, dance directors, genealogy leaders and activity directors. He supported his sons on missions. For more than fifteen years he had an assignment to meet tourists at Temple Square and take them on a tour of Welfare Square. He always prided himself in having a full bus. He had a fine tenor voice and in his early years ws much in demand as an entertainer.

He and Lucy loved social dancing and after Lucy’s death in 1972, Ebby continued to attend dances past his 100th birthday. He was often referred to as the “Waltz King”. He was a life member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was the Grand Marshall in the 1995 Veterans Day Parade in Salt Lake City. For more than 20 years he was a volunteer at the Pioneer Valley Hospital and was given a pink vest to wear which he prized.

He was a charter member of the local Lions Club and worked actively to establish what is now the Hunter Park.

He is survived by his four sons, Earl B. (Marilyn), Ray B., Eldon M. and Bernell B. (Gloria); nine grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at the Hunter 36th Ward. Interment in Valley View Memorial Park.

He was honest and friendly in his dealding with everyone and worked to help the less fortunate. He was a friend to man.
