YOUNG MAN KILLED IN AUTO ACCIDENT

Funeral Rites Held At Holbrook Wednesday For Spencer Smith

An exceptionally large attendance of relatives and friends were present to pay final tribute to E. Spencer Smith, at funeral services held at the Holbrook ward Wednesday afternoon.

James ***nett of the Holbrook ward Bishopric, presided at the services, which was as follows: An organ selection by Melvin Atkinson, Jr., invocation by Geo. * Richards, Jr., of Salt Lake City; a selection by a Quartette from Snowville; remarks by President Colen H. Sweeten; remarks by Stephen L. Richards of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles of the L. D. S. Church; a solo by Melvin Atkinson, Jr., accompanied on the violin by his sister, Mrs. Willie; remarks by George F. Richards of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles; closing remarks by counselor Burnett; a vocal solo by Parley Young, accompanied by Emma Spencer; benediction by Joseph Larkin. Interment was in the Holbrook cemetery.

E. Spencer Smith, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard R. Smith, Sr., of Holbrook, died Sunday evening in the Malad hospital from a fractured skull received in an automobile accident the previous evening.

The accident occurred about one and one -half miles south of Holbrook Saturday at 10p.m. when a car driven by Smith met almost head on with one driven by Leland Harwood of Cedarhill. The Harwood car traveling south had just started down the hill on the Holbrook-Stone road as the Smith car approached the summit. Both cars had lights, but the hill obstructed the vision. The cars met almost head-on.

There were four other occupants in the Smith car, Albert Nielsen, son of J. Peter Nielsen, who received bad cuts about the face; Lear Burton, 5, son of Mrs. Maude Burton, whose jaw was broken and who was taken to Ogden for treatment; Lot Smith and Willard Smith who were uninjured.

Leland Harwood, solo occupant of his car, received bad cuts on the head and hands.

Spencer Smith and his companions were returning to Holbrook from a swim in the creek south of there and Leland Harwood was on his way to Stone.

Spencer Smith was born at Fielding, Utah, on June 23, 1910, He is survived by his parents and the following brothers and sisters, all residents of Holbrook: Willard Smith, Jr., Mrs. Nan Bennett, Mrs. Maude Burton, Willard Jr., Joel A., Brian, Stephen, Sarah, Velma and Lot Smith.

CORONER’S INQUEST HELD

That Spencer Smith’s death was due to “an unavoidable accident” was the verdict of the coroner’s jury which heard the case Tuesday. The jurors were Irvine Madisen, D. W. Jones, Willard Archibald, Wm. P. Jones, Clarence Goodsell, Morgan T. Jones.
