Devere Harris

HARRIS, DEVERE, May 30, 1916 – July 6, 2006

Devere Harris, 90, passed away Thursday, July 6, 2006 at his home, surrounded by his family. Devere was born May 30, 1916 in Portage, Utah, the sixth of nine children of Robert Cromwell Harris and Sylvia Green.

Devere attended school in Portage, Utah and later at Bear River High School in Tremonton, Utah. Following high school, he attended Stevens-Henagers Business School in salt Lake City and Hartford Management School in Hartford, Connecticut.

He married Velda Gibbs, also of Portage in the Logan, Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on July 12, 1938. They resided in Portage until 1980.

He had a 34 year career in the insurance business and worked as a regional manager for Idaho, Wyoming, Utah and Montana until his retirement.

Devere was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as Elders Quorum President, Stake Mission President, High Counselor, Bishop, Stake President, President of the Idaho Falls LDS temple. He served in the Presidency of the General Sunday School and as a member of the First and Second Quorums of the Seventy.

Devere is survived by his wife of 68 years; six children; Donna (Glen) Cobia, Sherry (Vern) Budge, Robert (Teri) Harris, Lori Ann (Corey) Christensen all of Cache Valley; Tonya (Michael) Ford of Arizona and Melanie (deceased). He also leaves 26 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; a sister, Verna (Douglas) Laws of Layton, Utah; and a brother, Wayne (Ina) Harris of Kaysville, Utah.

Viewing will be held Monday evening, July 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home in Logan and services will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at 12 p.m. at the chapel of Hillcrest 2nd Ward, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Logan, Utah. Interment will be in the Portage, Utah cemetery.
