Davis Kenneth Olney, 71, former Blackfoot area resident died of heart complications Oct. 4 at St. John’s Nursing Home in Jackson.
He was born in Poplar, Bonneville County, Dec. 29, 1913, to Alvin and Mary Ann Wheeler Olney. He attended school at Poplar and Groveland, where he became proficient at playing basketball.
He had a great love for the outdoors. During the Depression years, he and his brother, Eldred, worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Shupe, near Salmon. Here he learned how to be a barber, cook, shoemaker, and many other trades that proved useful to him all his life. Most of his life was spent in Southeastern Idaho working on ranches with cattle and various other work for which he was qualified.
Shortly after World War 11, he went to the Jackson area, where he had lived since. He worked on ranches, including the Triangle X, and was a registered hunting and fishing guide, working for a time at Leeks Lodge and finally at the Colter Bay Marina. He also operated the Snow King chairlift for a few years.
He married Frances E. Fry Smith, May 1, 1958 in Jackson. She died in the 1970’s.
He had been a member of the Elks Lodge in Jackson and a member of the LDS Church.
He is survived by two brothers, Demar “Pete” Olne, Hagerman, Philip G. Olney, Idaho Falls; and two sisters, Mrs. N.H. (Wilma) Nelson, Ririe; and Mrs. Joseph B. (Myra) Peterson, Salt Lake City. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Eldred Olney, Vernal Olney and Ray Olney, and one sister, Ella Hunter.
Memorial services were held at the Senior Citizens Center in Jackson on Monday. Additional services will be held at the St. John’s Nursing Home this Friday at 2:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be at the Wood Funeral Home, Idaho Falls, at 11 a.m. Saturday under the direction of Hill Sandberg Funeral Home of Blackfoot. The family will meet with friends at the Hill-Sandberg Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and at the Wood Funeral Home Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of services. Cremation will follow and burial of the ashes will take place at Colter Bay, Wyo., at a later date.
