David J. Morgan

Morgan_ David J._17 May 1844

Respected Pioneer Called

Since the last issue of the Enterprise went to its readers, one of Malad’s oldest and most respected citizens has gone to his reward in that eternal home, which is the hope of every normal human being.

David J. Morgan, whose death occurred without a moment’s warning while he was down at Brigham City, where he had gone with his wife to get a load of peaches, had been a resident of Malad since 1865. He was born at New Bridge, Glamorganshire, South Wales, May 17, 1844. Came to Utah with his parents in 1853, arriving in that city on October 10th. The family resided in Salt Lake until 1865 when they came to Malad. Mr. Morgan served one term as Sheriff of Oneida County, which position he filled creditably, and from which he retired voluntarily at the end of his first term. He was one of the charter members of the local Odd Fellows Lodge, instituted Sept. 22, 1888, which order had charge of the funeral services held at the family home Sunday afternoon. Besides the ritualistic ceremony, Elders R.N. Hill and R.J. Harding spoke feelingly and eulogistically of the high character of the decease. The singing was by the L.D.S. Choir.

The circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Morgan are most pathetic. He and Mrs. Morgan drove to Brigham City Thursday, or within a few miles of that place at least, and went into camp for the night. Up to the time of going to bed there was nothing apparently wrong with Mr. Morgan. Within a short time Mrs. Morgan awoke and found him gasping for breath and by the time she succeeded in lighting lantern, he has passed away. She ran to a house a little farther down the road and from there succeeded in notifying an Odd Fellow in the city of what had happened, all within short time there were plenty of willing hands to do everything possible for her.

A delegation of brother Odd Fellows went down from here Friday, and the Friday evening train which bore the corpse, was met by between forty and fifty members of the local lodge.

The deceased leaves a widow, five sons, two daughters and a community of relatives and friends, to mourn the departure of a loving husband, an indulgent father and a true friend.
