Malad – Dana Augusta Stephenson Benson, 75, of Weiser, and longtime Malad resident and business-woman, died Friday, Jan 22, 1993, in Weiser.

She was born May 3, 1917, in Arlington, Kansas, a daughter of Augustus James and Dana Wells Stephenson. She was reared and educated in Portage, Utah, and was a graduate of Bear River High School. She later attended Idaho State University and Utah State University, and had then worked in Salt Lake City and Pocatello.

She married Raiford Guy Benson July 15, 1939, in Pocatello. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah, LDS Temple. With her husband, Raiford, she had owned and operated a funeral home and floral shop in Bingham Canyon, Utah, and later had purchased the family business in Malad from
Raiford’s father. Together they had owned and operated Benson-Horsley Funeral Home for many years.

She had also worked as an executive secretary in Pocatello, executive secretary to Elton Ashton for the Veterans’ Administration, and legal secretary to Attorney David L. Evans, retiring in 1985. She also had been a newspaper correspondent for The Salt Lake Tribune and The Idaho State Journal for 20 years.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had enjoyed serving
in the Malad Third Relief Society presidency, was literature teacher and homemaking teacher in Relief Society, and also served as a teacher in Primary and Sunday School. She had been a member of Utah Writers’ League, Idaho Writers’ League, Ladies’ Lions Club, secretary of the chamber of commerce, Malad Ladies’ Literary Club, Fine Arts Club and Gala Club.

She had also composed poetry. A book, “Drifting Echoes” was published in 1950. Also, a book of all her Christmas poems, sent out as Christmas cards. From 1945-1973, was published in 1992. Her original poems had also been published in LDS magazines, Salt Lake Tribune, the Idaho State Journal and a farm magazine.

She is survived by her husband, Raiford G. Benson, of Weiser; three daughters, Mrs. Terral (Dorothy)
Jensen, Weiser, Nancy Benson, Malad, Idaho, and Judy Hobson, Brigham City, Utah; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, russell Stephenson, and one sister, Eva Parkinson.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at noon in the Malad LDS Third Ward Chapel, Bishop Brad T. Thorpe officiating. Friends may ball at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home, 132 W. 300 N., Malad, to-
night from 6 p.m. To 8 p.m., and on Tuesday prior to services. Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery.
