Cleon James Neisen, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Nielsen Jr. of Pocatello was killed Thursday morning, Nov. 18th, when a hunting companion’s rifle discharged while the group was climbing a mountainside near Montpelier south of Georgetown. The bullet entered the youth’s left shoulder, remaining in the body, according to Bear Lake County Sheriff’s deputies. The rifle that discharged was being carried by Eric Yorker, Pocatello. Others in the party were David Madsen, Norman Pierson and Dan Norton, Pocatello. The body was recovered by members of the Bear Lake Jeep Patrol, Bear Lake Sheriff Mac Monson, and area residents.
Funeral services were conducted Monday and burial was in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens at Pocatello.
Mr. Nielsen was born April 3, 1953, at Ogden, Utah, the son of Charles James and Ralene Moon Nielsen. He attended Hawthorne Junior High School and graduated from Highland High School in 1971. He was a four-year LDS seminary graduate.
He was a freshman at Idaho State University where he was active in the LDS Institute and was a member of the Institute Choir. He was in his third year of a four year course from the University of Minnesota Art Instruction School and had completed a correspondence course from the Taxidermy School in Omaha, Neb.
Mr. Nielsen was a priest in the Pocatello 31st Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, an Eagle Scout and had received his Duty to God Award.
He was M-Men representative of the 31st Ward at ISU and assistant group leader to the Priest Group of ISU Fourth Ward.
He enjoyed music and played the piano, organ and cornet and also was active in sports. He was an avid hunter.
Survivors include his parents, four brothers, Darhl, DeeRay, Scott and Jedd;
two sisters, Charlene and Sharon, all of Pocatello; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Nielsen, Malad and Mr. and Mrs. Verl Moon, Ogden, Utah.
