Christine J ‘Chris’ Sweeten Goodwin

Christine J ‘Chris’ Sweeten Goodwin
Christine “Chris” Sweeten Goodwin was born May 7, 1951 in Malad, Idaho to Colen and Ruth Gerber Sweeten.
Chris spent her youth in Holbrook and Malad. She graduated from Malad High School in 1969. Go Dragons! She then headed off to BYU where she graduated in Elementary Education in 1973. Go Cougars! She got a job teaching Elementary school at Grandview Elementary where she was a favorite teacher, until she quit to be a stay at home mom in 1981. She later went on to teach Elementary Ed at BYU until 2003.
Chris met a tall, dark, handsome, motorcycle riding man, Bryce Goodwin, when she started working at the same place as him in Provo. They were set up on a “not so blind” date. They fell madly in love and were married on April 10, 1975 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
They took up residence in Orem Utah. There they raised two nearly perfect daughters: Teresa (Brian) Henrie of Provo and Jodi (Jeremy) Lindsey of Provo. Besides being a stay at home mom, Chris also taught piano for many years, worked alongside her husband owning a video store and being landlords for duplexes, worked on the PTA, and was in a singing group “The Neighborhood Singers”.
In 2002 Chris and Bryce inherited two teenage nephews, Shane (Chandi) Isom of Vineyard and Daniel (Courtney) Isom of Idaho Falls, after their parents were killed in an accident.
Chris’s biggest passion” was her family. She was often helping out at the girls’ schools, and was loved by all their friends. She was a room mother extraordinaire for many years. She taught them to love the better things in life ~ old movies, musicals, time spent with great friends and family, piano playing, teaching, writing, pumpkin cookie and Texas sheet cake making, and the love of Disneyland to name a few! She was her daughters’ best friend and their daily calls have been extremely missed.
Chris was always planning family get-togethers. She had a personal relationship with every one of her many nieces and nephews. After her mother died, she took on the astronomical task of piecing together all of her mom’s leftover fabric to make a quit for each of her kids, grandkids, siblings, nieces and nephews, and their kids! She made over 55 quilts. Which now will serve as not only a sweet reminder of her mother but also Chris as well.

One of her latest endeavors was retyping her mother-in-law journals as keepsakes for her family.
As fabulous of a mother as she was, Chris was a rock star grandma. She loved to spoil her grandkids: Sabrina, Kailey, Garrett, Beckett (Teresa) Henrie, Emmie (Shane) Isom, and Ivy (Daniel) Isom. She never missed a concert, program, or graduation even if it meant traveling 11 hours to New Mexico several times a year! The grandkids loved sleepovers with Grandma, a tradition that is already greatly missed.
She was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held many callings as pianist, teacher, in presidencies, and everything in between. She has a strong testimony and shared it with her family often.
Christine peacefully returned to the arms of her Father in Heaven on August 4th 2016. She was surely welcomed there by her parents; sister, Jan; brother-in-law, Chuck; and niece, Jenny. She will be greatly missed by her husband, kids, family, many friends from childhood and everywhere in between, and the many strangers she would get to know standing in line. “To know Chris is to love her.”
