Boyd Wendell Mortensen

MORTENSEN, BOYD W., April 23, 1929 – April 5, 2006

Boyd Wendell Mortensen, 76, of Idaho Falls, passed away April 5, 2006 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.

He was born April 23, 1929 at his home in Salem, Idaho to Morten Peter Mortensen and Anita Elnora Jensen Mortensen. He spent his early years and was educated in Salem and graduated from Sugar Salem High School.

He married Verla Rae Hill at Samaria, Idaho on September 23, 1950. They have lived in Idaho Falls since 1951. He worked as a Health Physicist in Radiation Protection for the Dept. of Energy at the Idaho National Laboratory for 36 years. He enjoyed his work and his association with his fellow employees. He used only one day of sick leave in his entire career. After retiring, he farmed in Samaria for eight years and then worked at the Idaho Falls Livestock Auction.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was active in Scouting and was Scoutmaster of Troop 8 for many years. He went to Scout Camp for 10 years and was diligent at camping year-round with his Scouts. He also coached American Boys Baseball and was a member of the Bonneville County Mounted Sheriff’s Posse. A member of the International Order of Oddfellows, he held many state and local offices.

Boyd was gregarious, fun loving, quick-witted, interesting and interested, generous to a fault and hardworking.

He is survived by his wife; Verla Rae Mortensen of Idaho Falls; a daughter, Shana Renae Woodbury of Pocatello; a son Ray (Gay Lyn) Mortensen of Idaho Falls; grandchildren: Martin, David, Stephen, Dustin, Scott and Alex Woodbury and Jennifer Mortensen; twin sisters, Marilyn (Eldred) Lauder of Salt Lake City, and Carolyn (Glen) Clark of Ellensburg, Washington; and a sister-in-law, Gerry Mortensen of Idaho Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; children: Linda, Boyd, Shayle and Tyrel Mortensen; granddaughter, Stacy Jo Mortensen; older brothers: Morten and Richard (Wanda) Mortensen.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 10 at the Idaho Falls LDS Third Ward Chapel with Brother Donald Schanz officiating. Burial was in the Rexburg City Cemetery.
