JONES, AVON L., October 2, 1923 – May 31, 2004

Avon L. Jones, 80, passed away at his home on May 31, 2004. He was born October 2, 1923 in Cherry Creek, ID, a son of Brigham W. and Mary Ashton Jones. Avon was married to Mabel Chandley and was later divorced. They had one child, Etta Mary Jones (deceased).

Avon later married the love of his life, Myrtle Louise Long. Myrtle Louise preceded him in death on September 16, 2003.

He was an active member of the Victory Baptist Church and enjoyed his association with the members.

Avon served in the U.S. Army from January 26, 1943 – October 31, 1945. He was with the 328th Fighter Control Squadron. As a guard patrolman in the European War Zone, he served in the following campaigns: Naples Foggin, Rome Arno, Southern France, Northern France, Rhineland Central Europe. He was a Thompson machine gun and carbine caliber 30 expert.

He earned the following decorations: European Middle Eastern Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal.

Avon entered the Army at Pocatello, ID and was discharged at Fort Douglas, UT.

After the service, Avon worked ona Montana cattle ranch and was employed for many years with various construction companies in Ogden, Utah. He retired and moved to Malad in 1984.

He was always willing to lend a helping hand to people and loved working with cattle. Avon also enjoyed working with his brother, Leland, in training and racing horses. Also, an avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed the Utah Jazz.

Surviving are two grandchildren, Paul and Etta Jane of San Francisco, CA; three sisters, Alta Moon of Malad; Norma (John) Everett of Pineville, LA; and LaWana Clontz of Ogden; one brother, Cleland (Neva) Jones of Malad; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his daughter; two sisters, Faye Jones and Sylvia Hefflefinger; one brother, Leland Jones.

A graveside service will be held June 5 at the Malad City Cemetery.
