POCATELLO – Anita Penrose Underwood, 84, passed away December 29, 2000, at her home of natural causes.

She was born April 22, 1916, in Downey, Idaho, to Fred and Julia Abigail (Coffin) Penrose. She was raised in Cambridge, Idaho, attended school and graduated from Downey High School. She lived in Downey, Salmon, Pocatello and Chubbuck, Idaho.

Anita married Cluff R. Underwood on April 3, 1939, in Preston Idaho. Their marriage later was solemnized in the LDS Logan Temple on January 10, 1976. She worked for a short time at Moore Drug Store and then worked for Intermountain Gas Company for 21 years before she retired.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Daughters of Utah Pioneers (DUP). She held various positions, including Primary president, Compassionate Service leader, Young Women’s advisor, member of Stake Relief Society Presidency and many other positions. Her civic duty was working as an election worker for each election. She absolutely loved and received her greatest satisfaction from her family, and also, enjoyed crocheting, quilting, sewing for others, attending musicals and plays.

Anita is survived by her husband, Cluff R. Underwood of Chubbuck; children, Brian C. (Lorraine) Underwood of Pocatello; David R. Underwood of Blackfoot; Julia Ann Underwood (Russell) Bench of Sandy, Utah; and Kelly P. (JoAnn) Underwood of Arvada, Colorado; a sister, Mary P. Christensen of Preston, Idaho; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Julia Abigail Penrose; brothers, Howard Penrose, Paul Penrose and Wayne Penrose; and sisters, Ruth Matkin and Vernessa Wright.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the LDS Whitaker Ward, 4890 Whitaker Road with Bishop William Pincock officiating. The family will greet friends Monday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. Fourth Ave., and one hour prior to the services at the church on Tuesday. Interment will follow at the Downey Cemetery, Downey, Idaho.
