Ada Jones Janssen

Ada Jones Janssen (Mrs. Allen S. Janssen), 87, died Sunday, November 14, 1993, after a six-month illness. Mrs. Janssen was a resident of Good Samaritan Village.

Mrs. Janssen was born February 7, 1906, in Malad City, Idaho, to Dora and Franklin M. Jones, both of pioneer Idaho families originally from Wales. Ada’s grandfather, David R. Jones, was a member of three Idaho territorial legislatures. Ada spent her early years on the family ranch south of Malad City.

Ada married Allen S. Janssen, former Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Idaho, on September 14, 1930 in Logan, Utah. Ada was preceded in death by her husband in 1983.

Ada lived in Moscow since 1931 except for one year in Washington D.C. at the end of World War II. During the war Ada remained in Moscow while Dean Janssen served in the U.S. Navy Seabees in the South Pacific.

Ada graduated from Malad City High School in 1925. She attended Idaho Technical School (now Idaho State University) in Pocatello in 1925 and 1926.

She then taught eight grades in a one-room rural school in Inkom where she traveled by snowshoe or horseback. Ada attended the University of Idaho from 1927 to 1929 and then moved to Malad City where she taught in the same school building where her mother was once a teacher.

Ada received her B.S. degree in Education from the University of Idaho in 1940. Ada taught junior high school English and Social Studies in Moscow from 1950 until her retirement in 1971.

Ada continued Allen Janssen’s longtime membership in the Vandal Boosters President’s Club. She was also a member of Alpha Chi Omega social sorority and P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Ada is survived by a son, Alfred E. Janssen, Sunnyvale, California; a daughter, Sheila Ann Klages, Spokane, Washington; two grandsons, Jeffrey W. Kiages, Reno, Nevada and Andrew A. Klages, Owings Mills, Maryland; two great-granddaughters, Julianne and Jaynie Klages, Reno, Nevada. Also surviving are two sisters, Jayne (Mrs. Warren H. Brown) McCall, Idaho, and Kathleen (Mrs. Earl F.) Chandler, Boise, Idaho.

The family suggests contributions may be made to the Allen S. Janssen Engineering Scholarship Fund, University of Idaho Foundation, Moscow, Idaho.

Funeral services were held at Short’s Chapel on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Burial followed at the Moscow Cemetery.
