POCATELLO, Ida – J. Grant Bickmore, 82, POCATELLO, DIED Saturday, January 23, 1999 at a local medical center.

He was born November 24, 1916 to William M. And Idaho Luella Nielsen Bickmore in Brigham City, Utah. He attended schools in Downey, graduated from Downey High School.

In 1935 he began employment with the Downey State Bank as a bookkeeper/teller, and operated several businesses in the Downey area.

One June 4, 1940 Grant married Marjorie Marshall in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. She preceded in him death August 18, 1995.

He moved to Los Angeles in 1945, where he was employed by the Security First National Bank, then returned to Idaho, where he became the chief bank examiner for the state. He subsequently received his commission as a bank examiner for the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. In 1950 he was employed by Idaho Bank and Trust Company of Pocatello as a cashier, becoming executive vice president and chief executive officer in 1963, a position he held until his retirement in 1981.

He was a longtime director of Idaho Power Company, Garrett Freightlines, KID Broadcasting Company and Commercial Security Bank of Utah. He was active in community, state, regional and national affairs. He was past president of the Tendoy Area Council. Boy Scouts of America, and very proud to be a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was an organizer of the Pocatello United Fund, and served in numerous boards, service clubs and foundations.

On a state and regional basis, Grant was past president of the Idaho State Chamber of Commerce, chairman of Idaho Association of Commerce and Industry, president of Idaho Bankers Association, director of the Foundation of Rocky Mountain States, and a member of the state board of health.

In 1970 he was named Idaho Businessman of the Year by Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity at ISU. He was a member of the Governor’s Health Planning Council, and was chairman of Pro-Idaho. He was a member of the Task Force for Higher Education.

His national activities include trustee, Foundation for Full-Service Banks, member of the Banking and Fiscal Affairs Committee of the United States Chamber of Commerce. Grant was elected treasurer of the American Bankers Association for two terms. He was a member of the executive committee and the board of directors. He was awarded the Bronze Eagle for his activity.

It was the third Eagle awarded, and was presented to him on the stage of Radio City Music Hall in New York City. He was the only Idaho banker to hold a high office in the American Bankers Association.

He is survived by one son, Roger C. Bickmore and one grandson, J.R. Bickmore, both of Pocatello; two brothers, David Bickmore of Bountiful, Utah, and Merrill Bickmore of Palos Verdes, California. He was preceded in death besides his wife Marjorie, by a son, Brad, in 1995, two sisters and a brother.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 1999 in the Highland LDS Sixth Ward Chapel, 2000 South Fairway Drive, with Bishop Marion Swallow officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, Jan. 26, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Henderson-Cornelison Funeral Home , 431 North 15th Ave., and 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the church prior to the services. Interment will be in Mountainview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to National Parkinson Foundation Inc., 1501 N.W. Ninth Ave., Bob Hope Road, Miami, Fla. 33136-1494.
