Charles H. Peck, Malad Pioneer, Dies at Age 91
Funeral services are being held today (Thursday) at the Malad Third LDS ward chapel for Charles Henry Peck, 91, who died Tuesday in a Lava Hot Springs rest home.
Bishop Hubert Gleed is in charge of the services.
Mr. Peck was born at Malad December 27, 1866, a son of Henry and Julia North Peck. His parents came to the valley in 1864. They built the first home, the first store, the first hotel and the first sawmill in Malad. The family homestead comprised what is now the Malad business district. most of the land was given away as building lots to people who wished to build up the town.
During his boyhood Mr. Peck worked with his father caring for a livery stable and toll bridge in Malad. He later made a business of farming and buying and selling horses and cattle. He sold thousands of horses to the U.S. Cavalry.
He married Anna Marie Bywater Jan. 4, 1889. She died in 1948.
Survivors include four sons, Don L. (Bud), Malad; Arthur B., Kearns, Utah; Paul and J. Lou, Salt Lake City; one daughter, Mrs. Marie Cooper, Salt Lake City; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery directed by the Benson Funeral Home.
