Melvin Devear Mathews

POCATELLO — Melvin Devear Mathews, 86, of Pocatello, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2001, following an illness.
He was born September 29, 1914, in Arbon, Idaho, a son of William Henry and Sarah Ann Iverson Mathews. He attended school in Arbon, and then his family moved to Blackrock.
On July 22, 1938, he married Georgia Delia Ormond in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple.
He went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad just prior to World War II, and worked there as a store helper for many years.
He had served as branch clerk for the LDS Bannock Creek branch. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Georgia D. Mathews, Pocatello; four daughters, Karen (David) Andersen, Myrna (Robert) Crapo, all of Pocatello, Rita Ann (Daniel) Autery, Benton City, Wash., Jill (Larry) Miller, Boise, Idaho; a brother, Henry (Lucille) Mathews, Blackrock, Idaho; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, five sisters and a grandson.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 21, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the LDS Cedar First Ward (550 West Cedar Street), with Bishop John B. Coray officiating. Interment will be in Mountainview Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the church.
