WILLIAM HENRY RUTTER

William H. Rutter, 82, died here Feb. 7th

William Henry Rutter, 82, died Tuesday, February 7, at the Oneida County Nursing Home.

He was born July 4, 1895, at Liverpool, England, to James S. and Adelaide Fell Rutter. He married Cecilia Dredge March 19, 1924, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He grew up in England and had lived in Malad since 1926. He owned and operated a grocery store in Malad for many years.

He was a member of the LDS Church. During the years that he lived in Malad, he had served as Counselor in the Bishopric, Ward Clerk, teacher of the Priest’s Quorum, in the Presidency of the M.I.A. and Sunday School and also taught classes in both organizations. Prior to the organization of the Seminary, he taught religion classes and assisted in teaching Seminary for a year.

He participated in both Ward and Stake choirs and spoke at many funeral services. Mr. Rutter served a mission in the Central States, 1918-1921.

He is survived by his widow of Malad; two sons and three daughters, Dr. William J. Rutter of San Francisco, J. James Rutter of Pleasant Grove, Utah, Mrs. Max L. (Ruth) Call of Idaho Falls, Mrs. Robert (Helen) Gygi of Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Nick (Karen) Randall of Joseph City, Arizona; 26 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; one brother and four sisters, J. Heber Rutter, Mrs. May R. Jack, Mrs. Lillan Housecraft, Mrs. Gladys R. Siequist and Mrs. Romie Hadfield, all of Salt Lake City.

Funeral Service

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 11, at the Malad First Ward Chapel.

Bishop Gordon Griffiths officiated. Family prayer was offered by Max L. Call at the funeral home. Prelude and postlude music was played by Emma S. Ward and Theo Fawson gave the invocation. A vocal solo, “I Know That My Redeemer Lives,” was sang by Nick H. Randall, accompanied by Helen W. Ward. Mr. Rutter’s favorite Poem, “The Touch of the Master’s Hand,” was read by Marti Gygi Berg and Deborah Call Schaefer spoke on, “My Grandfather.” Speakers included Myrthus W. Evans and Wilford J. Dredge. Remarks were made by Bishop Gordon Griffiths and Richard A. Ward, who also performed an instrumental solo, accompanied by Helen W. Ward. A vocal quartet; Louis S. Dredge, Douglas J. Gibbs, Foster H. Ipsen, and Richard A. Ward, “I Need Thee Every Hour,” accompanied by Mrs. Ward. The benediction was offered by Bishop G. Howard Neal.

Concluding rites were at the Malad City Cemetery, where the dedicatory prayer was offered by J. James Rutter.

Honorary bearers were members of the High Priest Quorum. Pallbearers were Hank Rutter, Bruce Call, Michael, Chris, Gary and Tad Gygi, David and Matthew Rutter, all grandsons of Mr. Rutter.

In charge of the floral arrangements were granddaughters; Cynthia and Lynn Anne Rutter, Terry and Laurie Call, Kelly Gygi and a niece, Kathryn Mills and First Ward Relief Society President, Karine Hill. Programs were distributed by Lila J. Crowther and Maria E. Williams.
