Couple killed in car-truck accident here

A truck-car collision here Tuesday afternoon claimed the lives of two Malad residents and injured the truck driver.

Dead at the scene was Mrs. William H. Richards, age 73. Her husband, age 79, presumed to have been driving their car, died a few minutes later at Oneida County Hospital.

Dennis Olson Thomas, 31, of Granger, Utah, suffered broken ribs and bruises. He is being treated at Oneida County Hospital.

The accident occurred at US Highway 191 and 50 south Street intersection during a light rain about 3:15 p.m.

Mr. Thomas, driving a loaded cattle semi-trailer outfit owned by Doctorman of Salt Lake City, was in the left lane (through lane) southbound for Utah when he observed the Richards vehicle apparently fail to slow as it approached the southbound lane while making a left turn, according to Sheriff Kenneth Wharton. Mr. and Mrs. Richards had attended sessions at the Logan LDS Temple and were enroute home.

In an effort to avoid the collision, Mr. Thomas braked the vehicle, sounded the horn, and swung to the right. The Richards car was struck just in front of the right front door, throwing it into the dividing median headed south. Impact swerved the truck into the frontage road fence. Lengths of the pipe rail on top of the fence penetrated the cab, sleeper, and into the back of the truck, killing one of the cattle. The front suspension was damaged in the collision. Cattle were driven from the site to Oneida Fair Grounds where they were held for the owner.

Mrs. Richards was thrown onto the pavement.

Deputy Sheriff Don Stocks was the first officer at the scene. Sheriff Wharton and Deputy Ralph Burton also assisted in directing traffic around the site while the wreckage of the two vehicles was removed.

Third Fatality

This is the second fatal accident and the third fatality at the same site. On Nov. 24, 1967, Reinhold Hoffman, 78, American Falls, was killed when he drove onto the highway after stopping at the stop sign. He was alone in the car.

These traffic deaths are the first in Oneida County since Oct. 26, 1971, when Brent Anderson, 27, Logan, was killed when the *re truck he was driving failed to negotiate a turn at the old Elkhorn reservoir.
