Mrs. Vesta Louise Drake Metcalf was born at Otho, Iowa on March 25, 1869, the daughter of Solomon and Annie Amelia Killam Drake. After receiving her education in the schools of Iowa, she came to Oneida County in 1894 to teach in the Oneida County schools. She was married on Feb. 19, 1898 to Frank Metcalf of Malad and they made their home in the Elkhorn district for a number of years. Mrs. Metcalf continued teaching for several years after her marriage.

Mr. and Mrs. Metcalf moved to Malad in 1912 at which time Mr. Metcalf went into business here.

Mrs. Metcalf has always been active in community work, giving freely of her time and energies to every worthwhile endeavor. She was one of the original founders of the Malad Public Library and contributed her services for years as librarian.

During the war, Mrs. Metcalf assisted in knitting and other Red Cross work as well as various community programs. She was an active member of the Presbyterian church and of the Rebecca lodge and will be greatly missed by these groups.

Surviving are her husband, Frank Metcalf and one sister, Mrs. R.C. Brooks of Los Angeles and one brother, Bryant S. Drake of Millvalley, Calif.
