Vance Clark Vaughan, (1916)

VAUGHAN, VANCE CLARK – October 2, 1916 – August 29, 2003

Vance Clark Vaughan, 86, passed away August 29, 2003 at his home in Honolulu, Hawaii.

He was born October 2, 1916 in Malad, Idaho, the son of Thomas Edwin and Carrie A. Clark Vaughan.

Vance grew up in Malad and worked on his father’s ranch. He attended schools in Malad and graduated in 1934. He furthered his education at Utah State where he studied electronics and he became an assistant instructor in radio and aviation.

On July 11, 1938, he married Florabel Tovey. They lived in Logan, Utah and Malad, Idaho and Honolulu, Hawaii. To this marriage there were two children born, Vance Ned and Kerrie Nalania Vaughan. They were later divorced.

In 1941 Vance moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, and he worked as a civilian in the U.S. Navy in the Shore Branch of the Electronics Division. This division served naval shore stations from Hawaii to Japan. Vance, who headed the branch, had logged about 1,000,000 miles just on temporary additional duty to western Pacific islands and the mainland. Vance was given a Superior Accomplishment Award for his exceptional work.

The following clipping was sent to his family from the Shipyard Log, at Honolulu November 18, 1952: “Vance Vaughan, Shipyard electronics engineer, has been awarded a Superior Accomplishment Step Increase for work of exceptionally high quality and volume. He has made outstanding contributions in his field of work and has shown keen judgment in a number of highly important decisions made in regard to work on Midway, Kwajalein and Oahu. ‘There has not been a single case of inaccurate or sub-standard work leaving his division,’ his citation read.”

On September 13, 1968, he married Hiroko Kihara of Japan. They were married at the Judiciary building in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In 1969, Vance retired due to health problems, and he began building his second home (with Hiroko’s help) on his property on the island. He loved gardening and raising all varieties of fruits, vegetables and flowers. He also had his own beehives.

Vance is survived by his wife, Hiroko of Honolulu; his son, Vance, Berkeley, California, and his daughter, Kerrrie (David) Holland, Ogden, Utah; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He also has one sister, Helen V. Morgan of Lewisville, Idaho, still living.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and eight brothers.

A private family service was held in Honolulu on September 5, 2003.
