Funeral services were conducted at the Malad LDS Stake Chapel Monday for Sylvester T. “Ves” Owens, age 77, of Ogden and a former Malad resident.
Mr. Owens died Thursday night in an Ogden hospital of natural causes.
He was born at Malad, March 30, 1897, a son of John T. and Mary Thomas Owens. He married Ann Jones, Nov. 15, 1920, at St. John. The marriage was solemnized Dec. 17, 1964 in the Logan LDS Temple.
Mr. Owens received his education in the Malad schools. He was a retired government security guard at Ogden Second Street Depot. A veteran of World War 1, he was a charter member of the American Legion, Ernest W. Jones Post No. 65, Malad, and a member of the WW1 Veterans, Ogden Barracks. He was an active member of the LDS Church. He moved from Malad to Ogden in 1942.
Surviving are his widow, Ogden; a son, John Wayne, Simi Valley, California; two daughters, Mrs. L.J. (Margary) Berube, Ogden; Mrs. Gerald (Ruth) Rupp, Pocatello; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Irene Chivers, Soda Springs.
Bishop Don C. Breagger, officiated and gave the obituary. Speaker was Duane Fronk. Family prayer was offered by Carl Berube; invocation, Dwaine J. Fortis; benediction, Thomas L. Chivers. Vocal solos, were presented by Robert Rupp and Eldon Corbridge. Accompanists were Pearl Stuart, who also played prelude and postlude music, and Marty Marriott.
At Malad City Cemetery, dedicatory prayer was offered by Raiford Benson.
Flowers were carried by members of the World War 1 Veterans Auxiliary, Cleon Schwartz, president.
Color guard and military rites were provided by Ernest W. Jones Post No. 65.
Honorary bearers were members of WW1 Veterans and Ogden 62nd Ward High Priests.
Casket bearers were Dennis Owens, Donald Berube, Carl Berube, Richard Rupp, Robert Rupp, Russell Richards, Thomas A. Evans and Edward D. Owens.
Benson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one sister, Irene Chivers, Soda Springs, Idaho
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Malad LDS Stake Chapel with Bishop Don C. Braegger presiding.
Friends may call at Lindquist Mortuary of Ogden, Sunday from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. and at the Benson Funeral Home in Malad Monday prior to services.
Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery. Funeral arrangements by the Benson Funeral Home of Malad.
