Sylvera Jay John, best known as Jay John, 70 of Carlin, Nevada and Malad, Idaho, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at his home with his wife and two shih-tzu dogs at his side after a long battle with an aggressive skin cancer that began in 2004 and spread to his brain and right eye, along with kidney malfunction, pneumonia and other complications.
He was born July 2, 1939, in Malad, Idaho, a son of Sylvera Benjamin John and Sarah Emma Richards John. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, Hilda Schwartz John; grandparents, Esther Hall and Noah James John, and Emma and Charlie Richards; and brother-in-law, Kyle Hughes.
He graduated from Malad High School in 1958. He worked at the grocery store and movie-theater in Malad. He was a journeyman machinist at Thiokol Corporation (ATK) for more than 30 years and worked for Newmont Mining Corporation in Carlin, Nevada as a machinist for 13 years before retiring.
Jay enjoyed fishing, camping and RVing. He had a very strong belief and faith in God. Jay loved his wife; his two dogs; his children; grandchildren and extended family. He was a special son, husband, brother and father who was funny, simple, dignified, upbeat, relentless, resilient, persevering, caring, respectful, helpful, trustworthy, hardworking, kind, thrifty and most of all, an honest man.
Jay is survived by his loving and caring wife, Cristina V. John, from the Philippines. They were married in 1994. He is also survived by his children: Jeffrey Jay (Anita), Linda Lee Singh (Johnny) and Steven James (Stacie); grandchildren: Corey Allred, Robert, Julie, Coltan, Dawson and Maklay; two great-grandchildren; and his sisters: Emma Marie J. Hughes (Kyle, deceased) Delorise J. Hales (Kennard) and his step-sister Sylvia Kay Clairborne (Dale; his mother-in-law, Maria Vicente; and a large extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held for Jay on August 22 at 2 p.m. in the Cultural Hall of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in portage, Utah. His ashes will be interred at the Portage Cemetery. If you desire to leave a remembrance of Jay, it will be placed in the Gerstner Machinist Tool Box that has been lovingly prepared by his children for his final resting place.
The family would like to thank all healthcare establishments, the University of Utah Hospital and Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah, who have treated Jay during his illness. Thanks to Dr. Ying Hitchcock, Dr. Jason Hunt, Dr. William Couldwell, Dr. Durkin and Dr. Felix de Guzman, and all the nurses and staff and those at the Red Lion Casino in Elko, Nevada, and Horizon Hospice.
