Susan Glee (Hartvigsen) Sayles

Downey…Susan Glee (Hartvigsen) Sayles passed away peacefully Dec.1, 2020 after a courageous 3-month battle against Covid19. Susan was born on August 22, 1943 to Joseph Vernon and Fern T. Hartvigsen, Downey, Idaho and was raised and attended school in Downey and was a graduate of Marsh Valley High School and attended Idaho State University in Pocatello.

Susan had a beautiful voice and shared her gift by singing in choirs and ensembles her entire life. With a” Heart of Gold” she possessed such a huge capacity for love and nurturing that it extended to her many pet dogs, cats and horses. A devout lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she faithfully served a Northern California mission. After fulfilling her mission, she attended Salt Lake College of Medical Assistants then worked at the LDS Temple in SLC and in medical clinics in Downey, Simi Valley, California, Logan and Kanab, Utah where she would fulfill her desire to help others.

While living in Simi Valley, California she met and married Timothy Flynn and they adopted a baby girl, Marjorie Kay. This marriage ended in divorce. Susan then married Lee Sayles and they combined families and made their home in Thousand Oaks and Porterville, Ca. then Kanab, Utah.

Being a mother was Susan’s most fulfilling life’s desire. She was devoted to Marjorie and Lee’s 2 children, Larry and Lora and to Joseph, her grandson. In Kanab, Susan continued working as a Medical Assistant as they raised their family and eventually became a Home Health Care Nurse.

After retiring Susan and Lee moved back into Susan’s childhood home in Downey, Idaho. They were both very active in their LDS Church ward and in their community until Lee’s death. Susan continued on her path which included being Ward Chorister, a member of DUP, Study Club, Red Hats and a Family Home Evening group. She remained devoted to her family, friends and church callings until her illness. She possessed an unwavering love for our Savior and Heavenly Father throughout her life.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Kenneth Elroy Curtis and Nolan Gardell Hartvigsen and husband Lee Sayles. She is survived by children Marjorie Kay Sayles, Larry (Allison) Sayles and Lora Lewis, Grandchildren Travis, Aubrey and Dylan Sayles, Joseph D. Curtis and Daniel O’Conner and Cierra Hoefert, Sisters Colleen Baker, Marlene (Jerome) Hall and Doreen Curtis and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors who will miss her dearly.

Sadly, due to Covid19 precautions, there will not be a funeral. There will be a small graveside service in Downey for family and close friends on Friday, Dec. 11th at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Susan’s name to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah.
