Sherman Burdick Smith, (1919)

SMITH, SHERMAN BURDICK, July 23, 1919 – November 29, 2008

SODA SPRINGS – Sherman Burdick Smith, 89, of Soda Springs passed away November 29, 2008 at home. He was born July 23, 1919 at Carey, Idaho, the son of Lafayette and Charlotte Burdick Smith. He married Juanita Ann Donohue February 29, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple. Juanita passed away on March 17, 1993. He married Gloria Ann Viehweg October 9, 1993 in Logan, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan temple.

Sherm was raised and educated in the Carey area until 1959. He moved to Soda Springs in 1970. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had been a fishing and hunting guide in the Bitteroot/Selway area in Northern Idaho. He also owned and operated a family ranch in Lewiston, Idaho, and was project manager for Terra Cor, developing Bailey Creek.

He was a high priest in the Soda Springs LDS Third Ward. Sherm had served two missions, Western States Mission and served with his wife, Juanita, in the Southern States Mission; also five stake missions and for 34 years was the gospel doctrine teacher. He also served as the Seventies president, spent two years working in Africa and wrote a book on his life history.

He enjoyed working with horses and making rawhide and silver items for horses, also cowboy poetry, Dutch oven cooking, telling stories, church and his family.

Sherm is survived by his wife, Gloria Smith of Soda Springs; five sons and three daughters and their spouses, Lafe Smith of Cove, Utah, Lana and Larry Rosen of Cove, Utah, Rena and Gary Woodward of Malad, Idaho, Jerry and Yvette Weeks, Larry and Joy Weeks, Danny and Suzanne Weeks, all of Grace, Idaho, Donald Weeks of Soda Springs, Dixie and Roy Dexter of Grace, Idaho. Also surviving are 28 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; one brother and one sister-in-law, Marcellus and Eloise Smith, Sites, Idaho, and Marie Smith, Kalispell,, Montana.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Krista Rosen, a sister, Orpha Mecham, and a brother, Cecil Smith.

Funeral services will be held December 4 at the Soda Springs LDS Stake Center. Burial will be in Carey, Idaho. Services are under the direction of the Sims Funeral Home.
