Roscoe Reed Smith, (1908)

SMITH, ROSCOE REED, November 20, 1908 – December 28, 2005

Roscoe Reed Smith, 97, of Malad, lifetime area resident, passed away in Logan, Utah on December 28, 2005 at the home of his daughter, Sue Laursen.

He was born November 20, 1908 in Holbrook, Idaho, a son of Lot Jr. and Sarah Louise Bingham Smith. He grew up in Fielding, Utah and received his education in the Bear River schools and malad High School. As a young man he began working with his uncle Albert on a farm in Holbrook.

He married Ida Hughes on January 11, 1928 in the Logan LDS Temple. They made their home in Holbrook and Malad. Roscoe loved farming, especially raising wheat and had farmed and ranched most of his life. His wife, Ida, passed away August 2, 1994. His enjoyment and love next to his family was raising wheat and working the land.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the Holbrook Bishopric as well as in various other callings through the years.

He is survived by three daughters and two sons: JoAnn (Conrad), deceased) Nonnenmacher of Brookings, Oregon; Sarah “Sally” (Ronald) Hartwick of North Logan, Utah; Arthur Reed Smith of Holbrook, Idaho; Brent (Mardene) Smith of Pocatello, Idaho; Glenn Sue (Richard), deceased) Laursen, of North Logan, Utah; 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ida; one brother and three sisters; one grandson and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at 12 noon in the Horsley Funeral Home in Malad. Burial followed in the Malad City Cemetery.
