Idaho publisher dies at age 54

Funeral services were held Wednesday at American Falls for Robert “Bob” Crompton, 54, who died July 27 following a heart attack.

Mr. Crompton, publisher-editor of the Power County Press, A.F., and other Southeastern Idaho weekly newspapers, was also co-owner of Litho Printing Co. in Pocatello.

A native of Garland, Utah, Mr. Crompton was a graduate of Utah State University, Logan, and began his newspapering career with the Ogden Standard Examiner where he became news editor before leaving to buy the Power County Press.

Mr. Crompton, a past president of the Idaho Press Association and recipient of the organization’s highest award — “Master-Publisher” — was a member of the LDS Church and veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his widow, Erma, and five children.

Funeral services were at the American Falls LDS Chapel and interment in the Fallview Cemetery, A.F.

Attend from Malad

Among those attending the funeral from Malad and participating in the military graveside service at the Cemetery were Elton Ashton who presented the American Flag from the casket to Mrs. Crompton and M.R. (Swede) Hanson who directed the American Falls’ firing squad and color guard in the final tribute.

(Note: As we have to do, I accept the fact that Bob Crompton was “called home” by The Man upstairs but I’m still going to grieve and miss him because Idaho and the profession lost one helluva newspaperman and you can’t find any of my colleagues who will disagree with that statement. —MRH)
