Richard Nephi Hill, 79, of 1060 Lake St., former resident of Malad, Ida., where he was superintendent of schools, died Thursday at 4:20 p.m. at his residence following a long illness.
Following his retirement from the field of education in 1943, he moved to Salt Lake City. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission to Holland for the Church.
A son of Joseph and Betty Harper Hill, he was born Aug. 16, 1872, in Smithfield, Cache County. He married Martha Eleanor Palmer who died in 1932, and on July 30, 1933, he married Ella Rose Hayward. She survives him as does a daughter and a step-son.
They are Mr. Alice De Paolo, Lexington, Mass., and Albert H. Hayward, San Francisco.
Additional survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Joseph Shipley, Los Angeles; Mrs. Eleise bowman, Salt Lake City; Mr. Susie Ann Bingham, Smithfield, and Mrs. Margaret McCracken, Ogden; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hill was born in Smithfield, Cache county, Aug. 16, 1872, a son of Joseph and Betsy Harper Hill. He received his early education in the schools of that place and later attended the Brigham Young college at Logan where he was graduated in 1896. He came to Oneida county the following year to teach school. He served as county superintendent of Oneida county for two terms from 1905 to 1909. At the end of his term as county superintendent he entered the employ of Studebaker Bros. Implement Co. for a time as traveling salesman and then became manager of the Malad branch of that company. He was transferred from Malad to Logan, Utah and later to Boise.
Returning to Malad from Boise he was manager of the Oneida Farmers Union. He was employed for several years by the Jones Milling Co. and Jones Auto Co. Later, he engaged in the real estate and insurance business in Malad. He also had farming interests in Oneida county. He retired and moved to Salt Lake City in 1943.
He married Martha Eleanor Palmer Sept. 20, 1899. She died Oct. 31, 1932. He married Ella Rose Hayward July 30, 1933.
He was a member of the L.D.S. church and served as a missionary to Europe.
Surviving are his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Alice De Paola, Lexington, Mass.; a stepson, Albert H. Hayward, San Francisco; four sisters, Mrs. Joseph Shipley, Los Angeles; Mrs. Eleise Bowman, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Susie Ann Bingham, Smithfield; and Mrs. Margaret McCracken, Ogden; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
