An Ogden boy was injured here fatally Sunday morning as he was cleaning a .22 caliber rifle, preparing to go squirrel hunting.
Ray Neal Hawks, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Hawks, 165 N. Washington Blvd., Ogden, died enroute to an Ogden hospital.
He came to Malad Saturday to visit relatives.
Oneida County Sheriff John A. Evans said the boy was shot above the left eye at the home of an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Farrell Daniels, Malad, where he was staying.
Born Jan. 28, 1944, at Malad, he was a student at Mound Fort Junior High School, Ogden, and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Surviving are his parents; three brothers, Reid, Ned, Kim, and a sister, Lynda, all of Ogden; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh L. Clark, Malad, and Amos Hawks, Ogden.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Portage LDS Ward Chapel, with Walter E. Gibbs, bishop, officiating.
Demore John offered the prayer at the home.
At the chapel, speakers were Josh Hawks, Devere Harris and Bishop Gibbs, who also read the obituary. Musical numbers were solos, Jerkin Palmer and Eldon Corbridge, accompanied by Myra Jean John; duet, Vereene John, Maizie Williams, accompanied by Azella Gibbs, who also played the prelude and postlude. Prayers were offered by Bishop Morgan Harris and Roy Mickelson.
Raiford Benson dedicated the grave.
Flowers were carried by cousins and friends with Faye Morris in charge. Bearers were J.D. Hawks, John W. Clark, Mark John, Hugh L. Clark, Stuart Patterson, Calvin Mickelson.
Burial was at the Portage Cemetery directed by the Benson Funeral Home.
