NED COLE SHAFFER

MALAD _ Ned Cole Shaffer, 64, 543 N. 200 W., Malad, died Tuesday in the Oneida County Hospital.

He was born Dec. 27, 1921, in East Garland, Utah, to Larkin Richard and Dora Woods Shaffer. He grew up and was educated in East Garland and attended Bear Lake (River) High School.

As a young man, he worked on farms in the Garland area and at the Garland Sugar Factory.

He married Sylvia Peabody on June 27, 1941 in Brigham City, Utah. The marriage was later solemnized May 13, 1980 in the Logan LDS Temple. Following his marriage, he worked a short time in Malad at the Lee Osmond Service Station.

During World War II, he served in the Navy. He farmed in East Garland until 1950 when he moved to Tooele, Utah. He had worked for the Tooele Army Depot as a mechanic. He moved to Malad in 1974 where he since resided.

He was a member of the LDS Church, where he held the office of elder. He also served as secretary to the elder’s quorum and as a home teacher.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Malad; four sons, Terry Ned Shaffer, Beaver Creek, Ore., Rodney Cole Shaffer, Rush Valley, Utah, Tom L. Shaffer, Grantsville, Utah, and Scott J. Shaffer, West Valley, Utah; two daughters, Mrs. Joe (Judy) Foster, Aniston, Ala., and Becky Marr, Tooele, 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Vernon Shaffer, Malad, Kenneth Shaffer and Jasper Shaffer, both of East Garland, and Don Shaffer, Logan, Utah; and four sisters, Effie Wilde, Salt Lake City, Mrs. Merlin (Carma) Gleed, Bloomington, Utah, Iva Godfrey, Riverside, Utah, and Mrs. Dean (Joann) Gunnell, Brigham City, Utah. He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, in the Malad LDS Stake chapel with Bishop Melvin Hess officiating. Burial was in the East Garland Cemetery.
