SALT LAKE CITY – Myrthus W. Evans, 97, passed away September 6, 2001.
Myrthus was born August 1, 1904, in Malad, Idaho to Hugh J. Evans and Sarah Palmer. He married Mae Kohler November 9, 1933, in the St. George LDS Temple.
He was employed with the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1936-1969, beginning as an agriculture instructor on the Pima Indian Reservation in Sacaton, Arizona. He and Mae later moved to Tuba City, Arizona, Chemawa, Oregon, and Riverside, California where he served as superintendent of each Indian school.
In 1929 he was called to serve as a missionary in the British Mission. He was a high priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as branch president, bishop, stake presidency and patriarch. In 1970 he and Mae were called to service as president and matron of the Los Angeles Temple. Following their release in 1975, they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he continued to serve as a sealer in the Salt Lake Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Mae; sons, Gary, Visalia, California, Robert, Bountiful, Utah, John, Higley, Arizona; sister, Maria Williams, Malad, Idaho; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen; son, Dean; sister, Maurine; as well as four greatgrandchildren.
