Melvin Ray (Shorty) Gambles, 84, 806 Wyldwood, died late Monday evening, January 6, 1997 at a local medical center.
He was born December 26, 1912 at Swan Lake, Idaho, to Albert Ray and Harriet Hawes Gambles. He attended schools in Swan Lake and married Florence Ione Green July 15, 1936 at Logan, Utah. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past year.
Melvin owned and operated the Log Cabin Service Station in Downey from 1937-1940, moving to Pocatello in April of 1940, opening the Alameda Confectionery on Oak and Jefferson. He was also a crane operator for heavy construction until his retirement at the age of 65.
He loved hunting, fishing, baseball and outdoor activities. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pocatello Portneuf Lodge No. 18, AF&AM Scottish Rite Bodies, El Korah Shrine, was a past member of the BOP Elks Lodge No. 674, and Pocatello Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife, Florence, of Pocatello; one daughter, Peggy and Earl Gunter of Pocatello; three grandsons, Brad Gunter of Phoenix, Arizona, Michael and Sandi Gunter of Wendover, Nevada, and Shawn Gunter of Boise, Idaho; three great-grandchildren: Joshua Michael Gunter, Stephanie Jo Gunter and Cody Ray Gunter; one brother, Reginald J. and Sally Denney of Pocatello; and three sisters, Clara Stone of Pocatello, Melba Palmer of Ogden, Utah and Mildred and Herman Gunkler of Palm Springs, California. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday January 11, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Henderson Cornelison Funeral Chapel, 431 North 15th Avenue, with former bishop Joseph Wiles conducting with Rose Croix services being conducted by the Pocatello Scottish Rite Bodies.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10 and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday morning at the Henderson-Cornelison Funeral Home. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, with Masonic graveside services by Portneuf Lodge No. 18, AF&AM.
Memorials may be given to the Shriners’ Hospital for Crippled Children, Fairfax Avenue and Virginia Street, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103.
