Melba Gean Hurd Coombs Hawkes

HAWKES, MELBA GEAN HURD COOMBS, December 27, 1928 – October 23, 2008

Melba Gean Hurd Coombs Hawkes of Fielding died Thursday, October 23, 2008 in the McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, UT. She was born December 27, 1928 in Snowville, UT, the daughter of Edmund and Maude Hurd. She was a 1946 Bear River High School graduate and was in the Box Elder County Rodeo Queen. She graduated from the Holy Cross School of Nursing in 1950 in Salt Lake City.

Melba married Verl Coombs in the Logan Temple in 1950. They spent most of their married life in Fielding and a short time in Prosser, WA. Verl passed away in 1994. She married Robert Hawkes in Elko, Nevada in 1997.

Melba was the public health nurse for Box Elder County for many years. She was an EMT instructor for Box Elder County and was a surgical nurse in Washington. She loved raising and training quarter horses. She was a member of Reined Cow Horse Assn. She enjoyed camping, hunting and having picnics in the mountains or in the desert. Her main passion was for her grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She was a member of the Hampton’s Ford Ward.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, her children: Cathey and Bob Peterson of Kirkland, WA, Vickie and Jim Stewart of Seattle, WA and Steve and Connie Coombs of Shelton, WA. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Brandy, Michelle, Carmen, Matt, Shauna, Katie, Lilly and Calvin, her great grandchildren: Madeline, Cailen, Vale and Annie, stepchildren: Brad and Jeannenne Hawkes of Howell, Craig and Linda Hawkes of Howell, Irene Elbert of Logan and Josie Jensen of Garland and their families.

Funeral services will be held October 27 in the Fielding Stake Center. Interment at Fielding Cemetery.
