Maude Ann Evans Anderson was born in Malad City, Idaho, 21 Aug. 1899 to Richard M. Evans and Alice Evans Evans. Her parents were of pioneer heritage and were early residents of Malad Valley. Maude was the youngest of five children but two brothers, David and Gomer died in childhood. Maude was adored by her brother Eli and sister Mable.
Maude attended school in Malad and upon graduation from High School, she was employed as a sales clerk in the Evans Co-op Store for some time. On Oct. 12, 1920, she married John William Anderson who we all knew as Bill. The marriage was performed by Pres. Wm. H. Richards in the Anderson family home and Maude became a much loved member of our family. She was a beautiful young lady whose merry brown eyes and lovely auburn hair added to her attraction.
There was always true love and devotion between Bill and Maude and she cheerfully made the many moves in their early marriage as Bill taught school in Daniels, Elkhorn, Pleasant View and Tyhee before they finally settled in Malad. Their first son, John Evans Anderson [Jack], was born in Idaho Falls, all the other children were born in Malad. A second son died at birth but those that followed were like Jack, beautiful strong babies that brought joy to the parents and grandparents. Twins, Dan and Dean were a challenge to even identify because they were identical but every child was loved and carefully nurtured.
Maude was a devoted wife and mother giving all her time and energies to her family. She was so proud of her children and their progress in school and community activities. Her deep concern when her sons were called for military service, was rewarded by their safe return home.
Maude was a member of the L.D.S. church but was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, The War Mothers, Native Daughters of Idaho Pioneers and The Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed the social activities of these groups especially when she accompanied Bill to the various functions.
As the children grew up and left home they became more dependent upon each other and it was a terrific blow when Bill passed away on 10 Jan. 1957.
Their companionship had been so close that Maude had great difficulty in adjusting to the loneliness of widowhood. An important part of life ended at that time and only the faithful love and attention of her children made this time bearable. Their love and devotion has remained with her through all these years of loneliness.
These children and grandchildren became the center of her existence and her remarkable memory could recall each birthday or special event in each of their lives. The knowledge of her abundant love and devotion will always be a choice memory to her eight children, thirty-five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
John E, or Jack lives in Pocatello; Wm. E. or Bill is in Downey; Alice Beth, Mrs. Richard McCartin resides in Redding California; Helen Maude, Mrs. Virgil Browder, lives in Phoenix, Arizona; Dan E. is with us here in Malad and his twin brother Dean resides in Salt Lake City; Marilyn, Mrs. E. Farrell Lusk lives in Los Angeles and David Ralph makes his home in Pocatello.
Grandchildren and great grandchildren were especially loved and in turn gave their love to their dear “Nanna”.
Maude passed away Mar 7, at Phoenix, Arizona, where she was visiting Helen and her family. When she became ill she was taken to the Boswell Memorial Hospital but failed to recover from the stroke and congestive heart failure that ended her life here, but brought about her reunion with her loving husband. The oneness they shared here is now complete. For this we can be grateful in our knowledge that death is only the door that opens to a reunion with loved ones and closes the door on earthly trials.
