Mathew Fifield Bird – (Birth 29 May 1886)

Funeral services for Matthew Fifield Bird, 78, who died Sunday, (1 Nov 1964) at the Logan LDS Hospital, were conducted Wednesday, November 4th at the Sixth LDS Ward Chapel in Logan with Bishop Van Ness Wallentine officiating.

Matthew was born 29 May 1886 to Lewis R. Bird and Ellen O. Fifield in Cache County, Utah. He married Louise Y. Perry at Yellville, Arkansas on 25 December 1921.

With nine children and 24 of 25 grandchildren present, Bert Smith, eldest grandson, gave the family prayer at the funeral home.

At the church service, prayers were invocation, President Lloyd R. Hunsaker, and benediction, Ronald King. Speakers were President S. L. Smith of the Malad Stake; President Glen Rex of the Logan Temple, and Curtis L. Miner, former bishop of the Logan Sixth Ward. Musical numbers were organ prelude and postlude, Grace Baugh; vocal quartet, Carol and Don Eliason and Marsha and Wells Willie, accompanied by Iris Hill; violin solo, Clyde Jenson, accompanied by Diane Gibbons; Relief Society Chorus and trio, Hattie Wallentine, Augusta Bailey and Louise Williamson, accompanied by Grace Baugh and Ruth Thornley and conducted by Gwen Miner.

Derle Thorpe, also a former Sixth Ward bishop, gave the dedicatory prayer at the Logan Cemetery.

Casket bearers were sons-in-law Mac Smith, David Woodland, Robert Bickmore, Darrell Johnson, Dee Hansen, and a nephew Phillip Penney. Flowers were arranged and carried by the Relief Society members of the Sixth Ward.
