Mrs. Powell, 95, died Monday at Ogden

Mrs. Mary Vanderwood Ripley Powell, age 95, died Monday of natural causes at Weber Memorial Hospital, Roy, Utah.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at United Presbyterian Church, Malad, with the Rev. Richard Goodier[sic] officiating.

Mrs. Powell was born Aug. 11, 1874, at Malad, a daughter of Captain A. William and Catherine Jones Vanderwood. She was married to James Howard Ripley on March 29, 1900, at Malad; he died March 19, 1907. She was married to Professor Samuel MacClain[sic] Powell May 13, 1915 at Malad; he died Oct, 29, 1965.

Mrs. Powell received her advanced education at Pocatello, attending what is now the Idaho State University; at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, and received her permanent life teaching certificate from Albion State Normal College in September, 1924. She also attended Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University), Logan, in 1938.

A charter member and past president of Native Daughters of Idaho Pioneers, Station No. 1, Mrs. Powell was also chairman of Federated Club, Southeastern Idaho, in 1938. During World War II she was the only woman member of the Idaho State Council of Defense, Oneida County. She served as president of the Roosevelt-Garner Club from 1932-1940 and was state Democratic committeewoman for Oneida County in 1940-44. Mrs. Powell was a charter member of the Malad Fine Arts Club, was an invited member of Delta Kappa Gamma, national education honorary society; member of Presbyterian Church and Ladies Aid.

In 1946, Mrs. Powell retired after teaching for 44 years in Oneida schools.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. C. Frank (Ida) Hall, Ogden; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Friends may call at Benson Funeral Home Wednesday evening and Thursday prior to service. Burial will be at Malad City Cemetery.
