Marne Maeser Camp (Birth – 29 September 1917)

Marne Maeser Camp, age 67, of New York, passed away Friday, March 1, 1985, at Montefiori Hospital after a short illness.

He was born in Malad, Idaho, on September 29, 1917, to Leo M. and Eunice Dillie Camp. His early years were spent in the community of St. John where he attended school. His mother died when he was a small child, so he was sent to California to live with relatives where he finished his schooling. He joined the Marines during World War II and became a Drill Sargeant; then later he entered West Point.

On September 10, 1949, he married Nita Buckley in San Francisco, California. They later moved to New York where they raised their family and lived until the present time.

He had been an outstanding scouter, spending most of his vacation at the Scout Camp working with the boys. He was active in the Parents Association of the School of Performing Arts, serving on their executive board and as Editor of their newsletter. He served on the Fathers Club and Parents Association of the Bronx High School of Science and the PTA of public schools during ’45, ’46, and ’56. He was active in his church serving on the Commission of Social Concerns, Educations and Missions and chairman of the Commissions of Auditing and Publicity. He was a delegate to the Bronx Council of Protestant Churches. He was on the Advisory Committee of the Neighborhood Economic and Educations Development Program and was a member of Alpha Phi Gamma and the Honorary Journalism Fraternity. He was a committeeman of the Bronx Community Democratic Committee, a committeeman and scoutmaster for Troop 178 for ten years and active as the District Training Course Instructor. In recognition of all his time and effort, he received a very special award, “The Silver Beaver Award”.

Survivors include his wife Nita of New York; three daughters, Jane Camp of Tuscon, Arizona; Claire Grether, El Granada, California; Maureen Nichols of San Mateo, California; and four sons, Dennis and Brian Camp of New York; Evan Camp of San Francisco, California; and Owen Camp of Philadelphia PA. 10 grandchildren and 2 brothers, Wilson Camp of Arieta, California, and Richard Camp of Pinole, California; and two sisters, Virginia Goddard, Malad, Idaho, and Maureen Thomas of Ontario, California; and one step-sister LaVella Jensen of Vacaville, California.

His mother and father and two brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, March 5, in New York, followed by cremation.
